I would totally buy a "GURPS according to Kromm" book. Seriously. Like right now, I'd buy it.

If you did, I would buy each one of them. I have found the adventuring sections of DF, Action!, and MH to be most useful of GMing tools because of the connection of skills to tasks. Highly recommend more of that -- perhaps a large, detailed, generic GMing book?

Try talking a look at the 2nd volume of GURPS Dungeon Fantasy, GURPS Action or GURPS Monster Hunters.

Also, usually for any particular problem, there's likely to be one or two skills that are spot-on appropriate, and half a dozen other skills that make some sense to use in that context, usually at a -1 to -3 penalty. And beyond that there are defaults, both from attributes and from other skills.

You can also try to take a look at the GURPS Skill Categories, available for free from e23 (if I remember correctly).

Seven years ago none of those existed and he didn't have that option. If he hasn't solved his problem by now, he's probably doomed.

You just can't keep a good thread down. :-)

I would like to add that in an episode of The Simpsons, Bart steals a book of research notes (I think) from Lisa and makes a ransom demand to give it back, saying words to the effect of "I have hidden it where you will never find it". Instead of caving, Lisa just runs off and retrieves the book from wherever it was hidden - to Bart's great disappointment.

In this case, perhaps, Lisa got to roll vs Psychology in order to predict where her brother would hide such a thing.

You know, as silly as that sounds, that is partially what a search check is. Running your hands over the walls looking for inconsistencies.

The thread that never dies, but it seems appropriate:

What skill DO you use to "go through the cabinets" of a room looking for something?

Depends what you're looking for. In many cases, you use accounting ;)

Any number of things for different parts of the task:

Forced-Entry
Housekeeping
Packing
Psychology
Scrounging

According B221 the canonical skill for it is Search, as that's what you roll against Smuggling.
