On the coming of age ceremony every male and every female in the village draws lots according to the number in each sex.

Surpluses are married exogamously at a rendevous of vilages. They are chosen by a tournament of martial sports and both polygamy and polyandry are permitted but only surpluses can be "extras". The games are often fixed by ritual conspiracy rather like a Palio de Sienna.

Children of chieftains and princes are used for political marriage either endogamously or exogamously. Sometimes they are given as a reward for achievement. Othertimes they submit to the normal lottery and tournament as previously described.

I was thinking it would be a unique moment to have the PCs visiting an orc tribe in the midst of their fight for dominance, and an old and wise orc "defeats" the biggest orc in the village with the Hulk Hogan Finger Poke of Doom.

Every year on midsummer, the eligible young ladies may go to a particular building in the middle of town built for the occasion. An hour before sundown, they lock themselves inside. At sundown, the young men "assault the tower" and "kidnap" their brides. Weddings are held at dawn the next day. Great drama is had in the "storming of the tower" and "resisting the kidnapping" but it's all actually in good fun and pairings are arranged ahead of time. They're not the barbarians their ancestors were, after all.

Several cultures have something like that.

Every male visitor will have a local woman visit his sleeping quarters at night to offer conjugation.

Obesity is not tolerated. People who are visibly overweight will be taken into custody and institutionalized until exercise and a controlled diet corrects the condition.

The local baron's picture is hanging in every dining room. A place is always set for him and a small amount of food is put on his plate. This is "the Baron's portion" and is not supposed to be eaten. Most households throw it away at the end of the meal, but the poor or greedy will eat it when clearing the table.

I wonder how many dogs in that place are named "Baron" just to get away with feeding the dog "the Baron's portion" :)

Would the baron be offended if some peasant feeds himself with the best cuts from the pig he just killed and his dog with the umbles and calls that "the Baron's portion"?
