My preference flips the other direction; I think the natural scale for ODE is 3" hexes, so that the Ogres fit into a single hex, and multiple counters can still be seen in GEV style scenarios with stacking.

That does take a lot of room and some additional cost. I've never quite gotten my act together for a full-scale version of this; I was looking into printed fabric "boards", and Catan-style tiles (which are about 3 1/8", and a good way to test the look on a small scale).

A *lot* of room. I wish I had the space for this at home. But I would not use it for this - I'd put up a permanent Lego train layout :)

Yanno, there's this sub-set of the model railroading hobby called 'garden railways' -- imagine your Lego out there.
