Default Character Prepping for an adventure - what do you take? What is your choice of Gear?

Here's the situation:

Its a modern or contemporary setting, lets say sometime between 1995 to the present.

You or rather your character can only take with him or her what you could reasonably carry on yourself while walking or running. However, that does include an average-sized backpack and maybe an over-the-shoulder duffle bag.

What do you take?

What do you arm yourself with ?

What kind of footwear?

Clothing (or 'armor')?

What kind of communications Gear?
(Assume a team with at least 2 to 3 others as allies)

IF it makes a difference, does the choice of gear change if the situation is:

1) Time traveling to a known destination.

2) Time traveling to a random decade or century.

3) Heading to a Zombie-infested city or town

4) Rescuing friends without permission of the authorities. "Off the Books" (Modern-day, with contemporary/modern-day politics)

5) Invited to be a passenger or crewmember on an alien spacecraft that has visited Earth...and is about to leave

6) Part of a Group of modern-day humans who have decided to STEAL an alien spacecraft that landed here by mistake.

7) You are part of a new group of allies or friends that hunt Vampires or other monsters.

My standard "adventuring" gear:
  • tee-shirt, long-sleeve cotton shirt, jeans
  • Leather jacket, fedora
  • Brahma SWAT boots
  • M1911A1 pistol w/ 2-3 magazines, several boxes of ammunition and a cleaning/maintenance kit
  • K-bar knife
  • My "church kit" (Scriptures, consecrated oil, etc)
  • A fairly decent first aid kit
  • An equally-decent portable electronics tool kit
  • Assorted survival gear (compass, Zippo lighter, basic fishing gear, multitool, etc)
There's some other assorted stuff...hardhat, portable radio, Civil War replica artillery shortsword, 96 hours of food and water, high-power flashlight, etc.

the other two on my lower back attached to my assault vest.

a white phopherous grenade
4 m-67 frags
2 sticks of dynomite with 8 second detonaters.wrapped around them with tape would be silver linked chain.
a silver coated machete on back.(always have usually)

a sawed off double barrell .12 ga shotgun loaded with .000 silver buckshot.
12 rounds in a ammo shot pouch on my left side.
on assault vest:gerber multi-tool.
-minoculer/nvg capable (thermal) (always have usually)
small pair of tactical binos.

on a drop rig on right thigh:

I'd recomend against jeans, when they get wet they can hold a lot of moisture and really rub painfully. Most outdoor clubs that I know of won't allow members to wear jeans during activities.

I agree completely...but not only are jeans are perfectly acceptable in an RPG, I am more likely to be wearing them at any given time than I am anything else.

The rest of the non-clothing stuff is already in the Go-bag that I keep in my front closet.

That is why, when I was still in the boy scouts, a standard piece of gear for any hiking trip was several pair of nylons. Wear those under almost everything else and it cuts down on chaffing and blistering.

they are also extremelly hard to move silently in as the heavy fabric rubbing always makes noise.
and most of them fit tight and cause profuse sweating in a humid enviroment.
they are a asset in jungle enviroments.

There's a few almost constants for me.

Small unmarked bills..almost always a supply of local valuables, whatever it might be!

A roll of coins..or often 2 of them...unless carrying brass knuckles is an option. (Spendable and useful)

Hollow shoe heels, with file and lockpick. a few bills sewn into my clothes

ball bearings/marbles

fire starting gear

Magnifying glass, adn a loupe.

Pepper, spray or powder

Gun, appropriate for the scenario--if that's an option. More often, if a gun is needed, I'll take one from someone else. (Unless my character happens to be a gunslinger type, of course.)

Solar scientific calculator

Leatherman and/or Swiss Army Knife

3 or 4 D Cell LED Mag-light
Small crank radio.flashlight/12 v power take-off

"Gizmo bag"
