Default [RPM] Specialized Workspaces

In High Tech, there are Specialized Operating Theaters, which are cooler, shinier, and more expensive than regular operating theaters, and give a bigger bonus to one specific specialty while only counting as basic equipment for others

The idea of Specialized Workspaces seems pretty cool to me, as I can very easily imagine say a Hydromancers or Pyromancers or Necromancers or Druids or Diviners or whatnot workspace looking different than a generalist workspace for instance, and looking different than each others.

Not sure how precisely I would price these however, or the specific effect I would give.

An Operating Theater goes from +2 (all) to TL / 2 (specialty) basic (all) by going to 5 times cost. 5 is the same as the cost of a normal Higher Purpose.

So, hmm

Specialized Workspace - A specialized workspace is focused for a single higher purpose. For purposes of that specialty only, a Basic workspace counts as Good, a Good workspace counts as Fine, and a Fine provides +3 or TL / 2 (whichever is better). For all rituals outside that specialty, a Basic counts as Improvised, while a Good and Fine count as Basic. +2 CF for narrow Higher Purpose (ie Divination), +4 CF for a normal Higher Purpose (ie Pyromancy), +6 CF for a Broad Higher Purpose (ie Elementalism).

Something like that?

That seems good, though I wouldn't necessarily the Fine workspace to TL. I wouldn't necessarily not either though - it depends on how much magic is treated as a technology in the setting.

Any discussion where you're not sure whether to apply TL-based bonuses to magic seems to scream for the mention of Sorcery Levels from Magic as Technological Progress by David Lichtenstein (Pyramid #3/43: Thaumatology III, p. 25).

Cost would be about 2/3 less for something that's a normal Higher Purpose (Tradition), 4/5 less for something that's a Broad Higher Purpose(Tradition), and 1/3 less for something that's a narrow Higher Purpose (Tradition).

Well, the purpose is to provide a bonus to the specialized field, much like the Specialized Operating Theater does, so it should cost more

The base cost would go down, then you could increase the cost for the normal range (x5 for +1, x20 for +2, x100 for +/TL).

Okay, so:

A path of Elementalism (Broad tradition) specialized workshop would run

4/5 months pay for +0 = .8 months
20/5 months pay for +1 = 4 months
80/5 months pay for +2 = 16 months
400/5 months pay for +TL/2 = 80 months

Under my proposed costs . . . for Broad
7 months pay for +1
35 months pay for +2
120 months pay for +TL/2

A Path of Hydromancy (Normal tradition, subsumed under Elementalism) specialized workshop would run
2/3 months pay for +0 = .67 months
10/3 months pay for +1 = 3.33 months
40/3 months pay for +2 = 13.33 months
200/3 months pay for +TL/2 = 66.67 months

Under mine for Normal
5 months pay for +1
25 months pay for +2
100 months pay for +3

The Path of Mordaxomancy (Narrow tradition, subsumed under Hydromancy)
1/3 months pay for +0 = .33 months
5/3 months pay for +1 = 1.67 months
20/3 months pay for +2 = 6.67 months
100/3 months pay for +TL/2 = 33.33 months

Under my proposed costs . . . for Narrow
3 months pay for +1
15 months pay for +2
60 months pay for +TL/2

Huh, similar, but yours are lower

It's just using the same logic for applying the bonus from Higher Purpose to a broader or narrower field.
