Default Reach One and Close Combat

Hi Folks,

I have one simple question: Are you able to parry with a reach one weapon if you retreat from close combat?

greetings

Only after you made your retreat.

I, too, am pretty sure that the official answer is "no".
Unless, of course, you are talking about the turn your enemy enters close combat. In that turn, you can parry with any weapon (or block) regardless of if you retreat. See FAQ 3.4.3.6. (That FAQ also seems to indicate that the answer for subsequent turns in close combat is "no" even if you retreat.)

From the upcoming Martial Arts:
"You can parry a grab, grapple, slam (including a pounce or flying tackle), or unarmed Acrobatic or Flying Attack with a ready melee weapon as your attacker enters close combat."
-- Dealing with Charging Foes

"If you’re able to retreat out of close combat, however, you get your full Parry plus the usual bonus for retreating."
-- Long Weapons in Close Combat
In short, close combat only limits an armed fighter if he starts out there and cannot leave. If someone closes the gap, he can tag them on the way in. If he's already in close, he can open up the gap and tag his foe. The moral of the story is "Corner the armed guy and go for the clinch, or you're toast."

By that wording, you can no longer parry attacks from Reach C weapons (like knives) on the turn the attacker enters your hex (as in FAQ 3.4.3.6) unless you retreat.
Is that really intended or did you just neglect to cite the sentence allowing it? It wouldn't seem to make sense to me if you *can* parry unarmed attacks on the turn the attacker enters your hex or if you retreat.
(Although I obviously cannot be sure how unarmed Acrobatic and Flying Attacks are defined, they sound like attack categories introduced in Martial Arts.)

Actually, there's no binary can/can't in Martial Arts. There's simply a penalty for using a longish weapon to parry in close combat.

Similar to the old Close Combat maneuver in 3e Martials Arts, I presume. Nice to have that.
