Thank you Andrew, for this very important reminder. Voting is a privilege and duty, but one which we can let fall by the wayside. Everything seems more difficult this year. A lot of the folks I've talked to are making a plan to get their vote in and make sure their voices are heard this year.

How is this thread even slightly acceptable?

We link to every Daily Illuminator post in this forum and if people want to discuss them here, within the forum rules, they're welcome to do so. Not every Illuminator is gaming-related; Steve posted about #BlackLivesMatter earlier this yet, for instance, and you can find other examples if you search the Daily Illuminator archives.

My post was nonpartisan, by intent, and I expect the discussion here will follow that lead. If people want to talk about voting rules in their area in reply to this thread, they're welcome to do so -- informing people would be welcome! Texas early voting runs from October 13 through 30 and voters may go to any polling site in their county during those weeks to vote; it does NOT have to be your specific precinct. Make sure you have your voter registration card and an ID.

When you do go vote, remember that most of the policy decisions on policing are made local. The President and Congress have little to do with setting Police policy. Plenty of time to find out how those candidates for Mayor and City Council stand. In many states, County Sheriffs have near carte blanch on how the Sheriff's Dept is ran. Maybe with some oversight by the County Commissioners. In OK, State Troopers get their direction from an appointed head of Dept of Public Safety with guidelines set by the State Legislature and Governor. Even the lowly and often forgotten School Board elections are important. They set the contract terms and operating rules for School Resource Officers or private security officers. District Attorneys have a lot of discretion on who gets charged with what.

For state election rules, timelines, etc:

Search for " Secretary of State" to find their website.

Links to register and validate can be found there as well.

DeadParrot is right. Don't fall subject to "ballot fatiuge." Vote the whole ballot. Vote in every local election, not just the Presidential elections.

stefanj is right. Your state's Secretary of State is your most important resource for voting information.

Doublecheck your polling place. COVID has changed a lot of normal procedures. Forex, here in MN, a lot of the normal polling places have been changed to allow more space between voters.

And a personal PSA: Consider becoming an election judge for your municipality. The average judge age is well into the high-risk elderly age range. It's probably not possible this election (consult your Secretary of State, as above!), but it will be of great help for future elections.
