Carry item after losing race

Let's say you have an item equipped specific for a race. Then you get cursed and you lose your race. Can you still carry the item or does it go with the race as well?
In general: can you carry items that are not suited for your class/race?

I'm going to repeat myself from another thread, so I'm just going to cut and paste:

The rules state that you can carry (i.e., have in play) any number of small Items, and one Big one. Any Item you are not using, for whatever reason (already using an Item of that type, your Race/Class/gender/etc. can't use it, etc.), must be turned sideways. This means that you could conceivably carry every Item that is Armor in the game, but can use only one, nominally, due to the restrictions in the rules.

Given that information, if you lose your Race, you can no longer use the Item and must turn it sideways, but nothing in the general rules says you must lose any Items tied to your Race or Class if you lose that Race or Class, regardless of the reason. A card that causes you to lose your Race or Class may say something different, but that's always going to be a case of a card overriding the general rules.
