Humans were doing fine before we domesticated cattle, sheep, and swine, but that doesn't mean we don't get anything out of having them.

I associate the idea chiefly with Fritz Leiber.
In the classic supplement MYTHIC GREECE, Aaron Allston does an excellent job of supporting the gameable thesis that mortals primarily serve the gods as a form of television. Not just the medium, but the industry including sponsors and such.
