Foam core could potentially work. i've had good luck making OgreMap2 maps with it.

Please be aware that with any material with a thickness other than that of the original ODE counter sheets, you will need to "tune" the 3D counter slot width slightly to accommodate the change in thickness while still getting a tight fit.

This is not difficult, but is a consideration.

The Newer DX model can handle 2mm products. Older models vary between 1.5 to 2mm.
