Default GURPS Social Engineering Review

Hi folks, over on my podcast's blog I do reviews on the off weeks. This week I did a review of GURPS Social Engineering!

I was impressed by the book, and I'm glad I read it...although I wish I'd read it before doing our last episode (on non-combat conflict).

Thanks! I do a new review every other week, since the podcast releases the other weeks.

Thanks for the review Joe! It's heartening to me that you realized that we didn't overlook "social combat," but consciously chose a different approach that fit better with the rest of the game. Other reviews have missed our intent . . . The fact is that we didn't want "social combat" because we didn't think it was good rules model. Our goal was to show the GM how to use the existing mechanics to shift the campaign focus onto social matters, and you clearly "got" that.

Cheers!

Thanks! GURPS has a very specific feel, and I think Social Engineering does a fantastic job of keeping that feeling while still providing a rich mechanical experience. I'm very happy with it.

it's inspired me so that the next time I run GURPS, I will be much more selective in the ways I prepare the system for the players. I will take some advanced systems from different sourcebooks, as well as write up which powers and ads/disads are not allowed.

I think that review just tipped my opinion on buying... once I scrounge up some play money.

Edit: Just bought it. Who says reviews don't influence people?

Glad to hear it. Hope you like it! I think it's one of the few GURPS books that can literally be described as "useful for any and every GURPS campaign."

:) It really is a good book and one that is a dense read so you don't feel like you got it all in one sitting and are left hungry still.

I agree. The expanded reaction tables alone are worth the price of admission.
