Does my magery level add to my effective skill level for my spells in any way at all

Yes.

Your skill level for spells is based on IQ + Magery, thus it acts much like a talent in regards to skill level.

There are other options suggested in Thaumatology for different styles of magic, such as skill level limited by Magery, but by the standard rules, yes Magery adds to IQ for calculating skill level.
