Default Re: Why doesn't Brawling have a Default?

In my own house rules, I allow Brawling to default from all melee weapon skills at -5 (or Tonfa -4). It just makes sense that if you've trained in close combat, your knowledge of distance and timing would extend to kicking and punching.

If I were to give Brawling a Dex default instead of allowing punches and kicks at Dx, I'd probably make it -3. We do have a little bit of an instinct for it. (It's interesting to me that untrained children who haven't seen too many action movies tend to naturally throw hammer strikes instead of riskier punches.)

Having worked in an environment where I see drunk people* fighting multiple times every week for over a decade, I'd say that this makes a lot of sense. Telegraphic Attacks are almost the rule, so that when a person who actually knows how to hit comes along, it is a shocking contrast.

* I know that the fact that they are drunk might skew my perceptions. But many of these telegraphed attacks never connect. I can usually get a cop before anybody needs an ambulance.

I'm pretty sure brawling doesn't have a default because in 3rd edition a default of 10 or higher would have given +1 damage.

Without training, can you still perform two unarmed parries before taking penalties?

You track each hand separately for number of Parries, trained or not. However, without training in an unarmed combat skill (or Ambidexterity) you suffer off-hand penalties for one of those hands, giving an effective -2 to Parry. (At least, that's how I read Number of Parries and Parrying with the Off-Hand [B376], and the various unarmed combat skill descriptions.)

This makes untrained hand-to-hand skills parallel untrained melee weapon skills; it actually becomes beneficial for average Joe to pick up that stick to defend himself with. Yes, they'll have to use All-Out and/or Telegraphic attacks to have a chance of hitting, but that's already strongly suggested by Martial Arts (Untrained Fighters, p113). This just changes it from a compulsion to a tactical necessity.
I agree with that. If you want a good idea of what to expect from a fight where no one has brawl, loook no further than the Firth/Grant fight in Bridget Jones Diary. Modern day human instinctual combat looks rather silly but a fast/strong enough person could still hurt someone.

If it's infinite, how can you tell it's a hexagon?

It's infinite flat, not infinite wide.

Umm, because it was defined as a hexagon?
