Do your Dungeon Fantasy players long for more things to do in Town? Do you need a huge system of tables for creating rich, flavorful, and evocative fantasy settlements? Of course you do!

Lucky for you, today I posted a huge new system of charts and tables for creating fantasy settlements.

My idea was to use a single, easily scalable system to create settlements of all kinds, from tiny little hamlets up to big sprawling capital cities. I've playtested it a little, and I think it's both workable and fun - but I'd appreciate any feedback friendly forumites might have to offer.

P.S. Just for added GURPSiness, it uses a hex-based system to determine the town plan. Some of y'all might like that :)

That's a fantastic addition to the options available on your blog Joe, I've tried the tables out and found they were easy to use and generated interesting and varied results which were nonetheless believable. I'll certainly be using these tables for my Discworld campaign when I'm looking to roll up a new town or village while travelling.

Thanks for the effort you've put into these :)

They say "it takes a village". That's all very well, but what if you don't happen have a village on hand?

Lucky for you, I've got it covered.

In today's post, I take my fantasy town creation system for a spin, and end up creating the Haunted Hamlet of Grimwych.

Today: another full-color battlemap for GURPS.

This one is a campsite. I think it came out pretty well - I can't wait to get the DFRPG going on this thing!

How did you make the hexes in the flocking? A lot of patience and a craft knife? A hexagonal cookie cutter? Gnomes?

Damn! That was silly of me - but I've fixed it now. Thanks greatly for pointing it out.

Ah, many thanks!

In all honesty, they didn't really require much skill at arts and crafts - if you ever have the urge and a free weekend, I'd definitely encourage you to give it a go.

The gnomes went on strike, the bastards. But I soldiered on regardless.

I made the hexes using something very much like a cookie cutter (in fact, it was a piece of metal designed for sculpting clay, and I just used pliers to bend it into a 1" hexagon shape). I peeled off the cardboard layer from the top of the foamcore, then used my "cookie cutter" to press the hexes in (just shallowly). Then I painted it and applied the flocking. Then I found that the flocking had obscured the hexes a bit too much, so lastly I went back over some of the hex lines with a toothpick, clearing away some of the excess flocking and re-establishing the grid.

Thanks for the interest! Again, I'd definitely encourage any interested parties to have a crack at making their own - it's really not that hard to get decent results.

I had it in my head that you had stopped posting for awhile, but evidently I just hadn't followed you in my blog list, so I hadn't realized Temian's adventure had continued! Consider yourself appropriately followed now.
