Imprementing dust vortexes, wraiths
Hi everyone, I'm trying to run a campaign inspired by Nethack and D&D, and I am currently making monsters to populate my world. However, I have run into a a few small problems implementing dust vortexes and wraiths.
First of all, for the dust vortex, I want it to have an engulfing attack that blinds and suffocates those trapped inside it. The engulfing part is easy: I just used a binding attack with the melee range "C" modifier. However, I can't seem to find any rules for binding attacks having secondary effects like blinding or FP loss every round. Am I going to have to make my own rules or is there something in the books I'm missing? For the wraiths, I want anyone who is killed by a wraith to rise as a free-willed wraith. Once again, is there something in the rules for this, or will I have to make my own? |

Re: Imprementing dust vortexes, wraiths
If dust vortices and wraiths aren't going to be player-characters, don't bother figuring out what character-rules are needed to construct them. Just make a note of what they can do, then when the player-characters encounter them, have them do it! You want a Binding attack to include FP-loss? Then it does!
The only time you need to worry about finding rules to create monsters is when the players are building monsters to play themselves! |

Binding has an enhancement for suffocation, I believe. For the wraiths, the disadvantage Infectious Attack does exactly what you want.

It's been a while, but IIRC it's possible to summon or tame monsters in Nethack. (Though usually what you get is highly random.) Both of those situations need (at least rough) point values. Unfortunately I can't actually answer your question, though I think I've read about this in one of the FAQs or on RPKs MyGURPS page, but I can't find it right now.

While that works for the blinding, for the FP loss I want the player to lose FP every turn they are trapped, and not just once when they're engulfed. And I think that it would be better to have the binding be a carrier attack for the blindness.

What about using Affliction (Choking) with Aura, Melee Attack and Always On?

As someone mentioned above the Suffocating enhancement appears in Powers for +75% and causes suffocation rules to immediately come into play.

Point-building monsters and other NPCs is an important part of becoming familiar with the system, especially for newer people. It also helps prevent people from falling into an NPC apartheid mindset; please don't discourage it. Quote:
