Default Re: Five Earths, All in a Row

Notes

Her Flexibility and high DX seem to be gifts from the Force (though they are not affected by Meta-Psi, and thus lack the requisite limitation); on the other hand, she did have DX 11 before the first probe arrived.

Her knowledge of Erotic Art was purely theoretical at first (she reads far too much on the subject, often when she should have been doing her homework, and she retains the specialization), but now that she's gone from 'plain and chubby' to 'slender, hot, and exotic', she's begun to put it into practice - unfortunately, the first boy she practiced with turned out to be a complete jerk, and Walter categorically refuses to even consider a relationship with anyone less than two-thirds of his age, so she's getting a bit antsy. Geoff still hasn't got a chance, though (well, maybe if he improves his looks and/or social skills). Yes, having even a single point in this skill is surprising, but no, I do not want to derail the thread with a long discussion about how plausible it is.

Her skill with Body Language is something she grew up with, unrelated to her martial arts studies (or magic, for that matter), but she's finding it very useful there. Yes, her related quirk is stereotypical, but there are a number of real people who have it.

An important house-rule relating to lightsabres: because of the way lightsaberse are represented in Star Wars, the activation time is variable, with the minimum time being a fraction of a second. Turning a lightsabre on and off in combat is covered in the EU/Legends setting, under the name Trākata.

Her style is a mix of modern Sabre sport-fencing (it was her PE credit freshman year, but then the school board fired the coach, because the PTA didn't want the kids playing with swords - despite the safety precautions that made it far less dangerous than football or cheerleading), the Force Swordsmanship style from GURPS Martial Arts p209 (as she played a character with that style the campaigne they were running at the time), and various speculative styles and ideas I found online, mostly in the GURPS forum (primarily taking from the suggested versions of Shii-Cho, Makashi, and Soresu).

Her lack of Style Adaptation perks is due to the style having been generated by her subconscious, and the collective unconscious, as a cohesive whole (nor is she the only one to whom the spirits have taught it, though she does not yet know that). She normally uses her lightsabre one-handed, but if she learns Power Blow, or another skill or technique emphasizing physical power over finesse, she'll likely need both hands on the hilt.

The Lightsabre Combat power from WEG is replaced by Parry Missile Weapons and Precognitive Parry. Active Thoughtform Creation and Path/Book Adept substitute for Trained by a Master/Weapon Master, as well as Danger Sense (for this purpose only), and Parry Missile Weapons is still a prerequisite for Precognitive Parry.

For critical failures, Leslie rolls on the Spirit-Oriented Magic Table (Thaumatology p260), though the GM should slant the results to have a 'Jedi-esque' flavor (or Sithly, if she's using the Dark Side at the time). Her style is Effect Shaping.

The penalties for Absorb/Dissipate Energy and Telekinesis are variable. Telekinesis is -1 per two levels of ST imitated (unfortunately for anyone who wants to imitate Yoda in ESB, the Super-Effort rules do not apply to Thoughtform Talent - though with the GM's permission, you could apply the enhancement to the skill penalty/energy cost), while Absorb/Dissipate Energy is -1 per point of damage absorbed and dissipated, per second. Life Detection's penalty of 0 only applies to detecting beings with psi powers (including Perk-level abilities, as well as Disadvantages and Quirks that are effectively 'psi abilities harmful to the user'); fully mundane life forms give a base penalty of -1.

Her holocron contains an interactive imprint of Jedi Master Aayla Secura as gatekeeper, and may contain others; for purposes of Improvement Through Study, she counts as studying one-on-one with a professional teacher of Lightsabre Fencing, and all non-Dark Side Force abilities. Both it and her lightsabre were props she bought at conventions (though the lightsabre was commissioned at the con' to her specifications, and delivered later), and deeply treasured for years, which have been spontaneously enchanted. The similarity of her lightsabre to other cutting tools that are or will be on the market allows it to be bought as Signiture Gear, rather than a Gadget with the Signature Gear Perk added, like her holocron.

Falling to the Dark Side can perhaps be best modeled by the Power Corrupts rules (Horror pp146-148), with taint occurring when the Force is used while allowing one's self to be controlled by one's emotions, particularly anger, hate, and fear, moreso if one is using a power that requires giving in to such emotions. Appropriate disadvantages one might gain from Dark Side corruption include Addiction (Murder, Dark Side Use, possibly others), Bad Temper, Berserk, Bloodlust, Bully, Callous, Delusions, Destiny, Frightens Animals, Greed, Jealousy, Megalomania, Obsession, Overconfidence, Sadism, Selfish, Stubbornness, and weakening or loss of positive mental disadvantages and quirks. Starting out with any of these disadvantages, of course, can easily lead the Force-user down a very Dark path.

Thoughts?

Notes

Dr. Chase is considered quite exceptional in his profession: he knew all those languages before the other Earths showed up, rather than gaining them through strange powers. While the group does not have a regular DM for D&D, Stuart tends to run it more often than not, having been playing it since the 1980s.

Having a permit does not mean that he's inclined to use his pistol, save for practice, or in emergencies - after all, the police tend to frown on that sort of thing.

His symbol charm cards normally bear one symbol each, being used as single-use symbol tokens, but some of them are prepared with two or more, for use with Parchment Symbol Casting. The rule that 'A person can only carry or use one charm created by a particular ritual at any given time,' (Thaumatology p139) does not apply to charms bearing only one symbol, but does apply to those bearing two or more.

His symbol fetishes are two of a group of medium-quality opals he found on a camping trip with Walter (there are a few places that let you keep any stones you find; it's called 'tourist mining'), and carved (very slowly and carefully, discarding and selling several mistakes) himself. The fact that they became enchanted far faster than his GURPS books indicate (one hour each, as per the Fetish ritual) was noted with interest. He has also gathered some onyx, lodestones, and fulgurites for the other runes he's skilled in (see 'Magically Potent Materials', GURPS Magic (for 4e) p222). By the end of 2013, he will have empowered symbol fetishes for all the runes listed above, and will likely have learned one or two other runes.

For critical failures, Stuart rolls on the standard GURPS Critical Spell Failure Table.

The wiki entry for Historical linguistics, for those who want to know; the listed sub-fields of study should be considered optional specializations, unless you really want your game to be that granular. The existence of those optional specializations are why it isn't just a specialization of Linguistics.

Information on the medieval Seven Liberal Arts as separate skills can be found on p32 of Low-Tech Companion 1, or Locations: Worminghall p8. Expert Skill (Liberal Arts) covers all of them (save Latin), but only shallowly. Hobby Skill (Liberal Arts) is possible, but would be very shallow.

How would having a huge collection of books be a disadvantage in play?

It's a quirk. It basically means that he's always buying them, and he isn't focusing on things that would be useful in the campaigne.

EDIT: I will be adding the last of this set of characters in the next post or two (hopefully not three). Also, note that I live in South Florida, and may lose power over the weekend, and for I-hope-not-too-long. Depending on circumstances, I may also have power but no internet for a while, or something like that.

Notes

If the GM wishes to set the PCs' city in a different terrain, replace Woodlands with that one.

Walter has begun working on Geoff's social skills (not that Walter is brilliant in that area), in the hope that Leslie will start chasing a guy in her own age group... who isn't a creep.

Walter was already an unusually-skillful character before the Probe from Dsp-Earth/Earth-2 arrived, though he lacked any cinematic abilities or disadvantages, and his rivals were business rivals, who didn't go around challenging people (though at least the ones he knows about do polite, formal challenges, not walking up to people in the street like a chambara film). Somewhere along the way, they've discovered that the spirits reward 'in-genre' behavior (Crunch: You get character points for it, and/or better luck), and are trying to balance that with staying within the law, and (mostly) otherwise not being jerks.

Trained By A Master is replaced by Active Thoughtform Generation (or Thoughtform Talent, or a Chi-related Talent) and Path/Book Adept, in this setting.

The Aikido variant Walter's school teaches includes Esoteric Medicine (Yin/Yang Healing), which is thus covered by Path/Book Adept, as well as First Aid instruction (which isn't, but doesn't need to be); it adds Pharmacy (Herbal)/TL8 and Karate (Aikijutsu) to Optional Skills, and Feint (Karate) to Optional Techniques. The Aikijutsu variant teaches First Aid, but not Yin/Yang Healing, and adds Karate (Aikijutsu) to required skills, and Feint (Karate) to required techniques. Both styles add Body Language to Optional Skills, and Sense Killing Intent (see below) to Optional Techniques.

Since he gained his powers, Walter has begun to have dreams about a group of rather stereotypical Old Martial Arts Masters, who have been teaching him various cinematic skills, starting from the prerequisites thereof. He's gotten his Stealth up to a level that the Master of Invisibility Art considers barely adequate, and is now learning Hypnotism from her. His skill in Pressure Points, on the other hand, is still far below the level at which he could learn Pressure Secrets. He's hoping one of the Old Masters will be Bruce Lee, but it hasn't happened, yet.

His Avatar, resembling a Kirin, manifests when he uses a cinematic skill or technique at an important moment, for those who have any esoteric sensitivity (even a Perk, or a point of skill in an information-gathering Path, will do), or are a target. It may also manifest under other circumstances, such as when meditating. He can suppress it if he wishes, but must choose to do so. Sometimes, when he suppresses it, it manifests after he's done, but some observers and targets may remember it as if it happened during the action. The kirin always appears 'above and behind' him (that is, he is between the observer and the kirin, which towers over him), regardless of the angle(s) of the observer(s).

For critical failures, Walter rolls on the "Oriental" Table (Thaumatology p259); his style is functionally Effect Shaping.

Detect Killing Intent defaults to Per-7 to detect psychically emitted Killing Intent (satsu ki, or 'sakki'), but requires some level of psychic awareness (Active Thoughtform Generation is enough, as are receptive Telepathy Perks like 'I Know What You Mean', 'Synchronize', and particularly 'Tactical Reading'; advantages such as Danger Sense and Empathy also work) to sense killing intent from mundanes, or empowered individuals who do not emit it telepathically (Walter falls in the latter category, if provoked enough to have killing intent at all). This is a passive skill, rolled by the GM.

A purely mundane (and fairly realistic) form of Detect Killing Intent was suggested by Walrus, as an Average technique based on the Body Language skill. That also works in this setting, but has all the usual limitations of Body Language (such as not being useful for detecting ambushes, unless you can see one of the ambushers). I'm calling the technique 'Sense Killing Intent', to distinguish it from the skill. As with Detect Killing Intent, it is a passive technique. Walter had it before the other Earths showed up, and taught it to those who were interested in studying Body Language.

Psychically emitted Killing Intent in this setting, if improved to the point that it can be used as an attack (rather than a Quirk or exotic Disadvantage that can give away your position and/or intentions), is usually some variant of Instill Fear (Psionic Powers pp64-65). This is sometimes accompanied or replaced by an Affliction of some sort, or in rarer cases, Binding (e. g. Gaze of the Serpent, below) or an Innate Attack (occasionally with the Aura or Emanation enhancement, such as a PK-based Crushing attack on the floor, ground, and/or nearby objects (often with a Follow-Up that has the fragments floating in the air), as seen in many anime and manga). The latter effect is often Uncontrollable, and the main power may be, as well.

Walter's unknown enemy (don't read if you plan to play Walter Suzuki):
Spoiler:

Might build up to something like these:

Flying Fist (Crushing Attack [5/lvl]; Double Knockback, +20%; Increased 1/2D, 100 meters, +50%; Jet, +0%; Psychokinetic, -10%; Selectivity, +10%; Variable, +5%) (+75%) [8.75/lvl] (with Low Signature: 9.25/lvl; with No Signature: 9.75/lvl)

Gaze of the Serpent (Binding [2/lvl]; Based on Will, +20%; Engulfing, +60%; No Signature, +20%; Telepathy, -10%; Vision Based, -20%) (+70%) [3.4/lvl]

So, thoughts?

In that case, I'd use quirk level Debt to represent the fact that he is always expanding his collection. Compulsive Spending limited to books as a special effect would be another good way to limit this.

I'm slightly sleep deprived, so this may not be the best reply: You are reading way too much into what I am saying. I know nitpicking tiny details is a normal thing in internet forums, and I'm glad you're trying to help, but this seems like a lot of effort on a rather small piece of characterization. He has a huge collection of books, just like someone else might have a huge collection of Victorian dolls, or baseball cards. He just gets more use out of them, even if the use is mainly entertainment.

Notes

The Cizko family is a respected New England clan, most of whom have some level of Telepathey Talent, and a few abilities. They would prefer to pretend that Edgar does not exist, but if he will insist on blackening the family name, they will persue him. The most well-known member of the family, Congressman Willian Cizko, is distinctive for having the strongest Mind Shield they know of (even young Charles Xavier, a distant cousin from Westchester, New York, acknowledged as a great prodigy by the family, was impressed), and little in the way of other abilities. The name, incidentally, is correctly pronounced 'See-koh,' and apart from Edgar, anyone in the family will be offended if you insist on calling them 'Psycho' (yet another humiliation Edgar has heaped upon the family he loathes).

For Telepaths, I'm going to say that Brainwashing defaults from Suggestion-4 or Telereceive-6.

Thoughts?
