Re: How exactly would a Religion of a god of theives work?
Among his other areas of patronage, St. Nicholas has been called the Patron Saint of Thieves, by virtue (if one can call it that) of his skill in getting into other people's houses.
Not exactly thievery, but you could make use of this guy: Quote:

As to the business of travelling bards - might we be confusing the Bard (medieval balladeer) and the Bard (iron age Celtic) ... who was at least partially religious in character?

Yeah, sorry, that was a tangent.
In the absence of actual deities, I would expect that this would be one of the more honest churches - after all, the flock knows all the tricks of the trade.

Re: How exactly would a Religion of a god of theives work?
I'd say it was a fair interjection given that we've already brought up bards as part of a hypothetical cult ... "bardic immunity" tends to get rolled out in fRPGs without people realising that it was a pre-medieval thing and the nearest medieval equivalents were fools (for playing devil's advocate and other "backwards" roles) and heralds (for the messengers and go-betweens) and that being a wandering minstrel wasn't a priviledged role.

Weren't the Roman crossroad cults more or less dens of sin and inequity? You pay homage to the gods of your "turf" and live off of the people who live in the area. Since the turf zones are divinely ordained, ou have an excuse to avoid turf wars, which benefits all the thieves.

If they're seven-foot shapechanging lizards from the fifth dimension, yes.

Not just iron age. The last great age of the gaelic bardic poets was in the 16th century. Several people had the title (and duties) of ollamh in Ireland up through the nine years war, and it persisted for almost another century in the Scottish Highlands (but was starved without the influx of school trained Irish poets), finally fading completely in the 18th century (after the scouring of the Highlands).
