Venturing into GM-House-Rules-Interpretation-Grain-Of-Salt territory here, but I cheerfully combine Jet and a 1-yard Cone all the time for the popular "Line" type attack - usually also increasing the half-damage range to match the Max but sometimes that's acceptable.

Whirlwind attack!

(Which has a max range of 1, but hey)

How about throwing it?

Wait, that came out wrong. ;)

Why would you need Jet for that?

Because sometimes it just seems stupid to be taking ranged attack penalties for your enormous flashy swath of destruction attack. Substitute "uncool" or "not awesome" for "stupid" as desired.

It also depends on whether you're going for an instant blast or something you can direct a bit, more Force Lightning-y.

Although, a cone being an area attack, what do you need to aim anyway? With the usual blast it's pretty obvious, you aim the center and everything within the radius either dodges and drops or suffers damage. With a 1 yd line, do you aim the end point or can you choose pretty any point on it (which would make it a bit too easy if you got a hex map and an close enemy, though)?

If it's the end, then that would be a -11 for the canonical TOG lightning bolt (120 yd line). Default accuracy of +3, aim for the hex +4, so you'd need Accurate 4 [+20%] to have the same chance as Jet. Probably cheaper than to buy Increased Range for the Jet.

Edit: Oops, that's a 120 feet line, so a -8 penalty. So you'd need a single level of Accurate.

I'm not sure how "aiming" stumbled into this conversation?

Not the aim action, I meant what do you target/attack? Grenades/fireaballs need a center, what does a cone/line need?

The only reason I can see to have a beam of magical energy be a Jet with Cone instead of simply a Cone would be to escape having to aim it in order to hit.

As such, it might fit dragon's breath that persists for a significant fraction of a second, making it adjustable 'in use'.

I'm not quite expressing myself clearly.

That was the whole idea - but I'm getting told I should be Aiming (to get the accuracy bonus) and buying extra accuracy - but that isn't cheaper at all, it requires you to take an Aim action every turn - that's very expensive as it effectively halves damage output :/

I'm just confused and confusing other people.

Quite a few people on the forum seem to think that flamethrowers should work this way anyways - at least judging by the questions and comments. It only makes sense to me that some things in a fantasy situation work the way we think they should ;)

Dragons breath, a "directed shockwave" or blast or whatever - the idea that all of these sorts of things would hit the first target in the line and then stop strikes me as just as odd as these things taking ranged to hit penalties and being impacted by general ranged attack stuff. It's no more "ranged" than a regular Jet is, so it seems obvious to put Jet on them. And Jet stops at the first thing hit, so then you need to modify it into a one-yard cone so it hits everything in the line, not just the first thing.

Ergo, Jet-Cone.
