As a follow-up to the prior post on aggressive use of the shield in the style of combat I'm learning, I try and map some of the typical things that are seen in my classes to GURPS. Plenty of hooks in the rules for such things, to no one's surprise.

Finally I follow up on the accumulated tech notes with respect to GURPS TL9 rifle technology. I combine a few inventions with a few standard UT capabilities to provide a few guesses at capabilities for a proper TL9 rifle that's a tetch higher performance than those in the Ultra-Tech book proper.

Thursday is GURPSDay, but today is Sunday . . . I was up in Hackensack, MN for a week, the Land that Bandwidth Forgot. So now that I’m back, we’ll have a pair of GURPSDay posts with a scale-armor motif, in that this coming Thursday will cover from July 21-27 as usual. So without further ado:

GURPSDay Summary Jul 14 – Jul 23, 2017

Massive session report, covering two episodes of The Ceteri campaign run by Christopher Rice. In Ep 6, we go bowling and then horrible things happen: a metaphorical gutter ball. Ep 7 features the aftermath of that event, where the team breaks every single rule ever invented in dealing with faerie folk.

Thursday is GURPSDay, but today is a special day: the GURPS Line Editor, Sean Punch, turns 50. So happy birthday to Doctor Kromm. Several of us are going to be offering some retrospectives about why working with Sean is a true pleasure. In fact, one of the reasons I upped my ante for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG Kickstarter to “play a game with the line editor, Sean Punch/Dr. Kromm” is not because he’s “The GURPS Line Editor,” but rather because he’s Sean.

Welcome to the second year of GURPSDay, and here’s the pull for this week.

From today's Daily Illuminator. SJG is responding to demand from their distributors and retailers, and offering their PoD bundles to them for sale. This is great news for the brand! Kudos to SJG for the move.

More commentary on shields, after watching a video of dynamic one-on-one combat with heater shields rather than viking shields. Fascinating, and you'll see more on this in coming days.

In GURPS I don't find shields lack awesome, but the Shield skill does

Shields add to your dodge and parry with their DB, even if you have 0pts in the skill

So people I've seen often put 2 or 4 points into Shield, but once their looking at '4 to raise' they rather raise weapon skill

Since your the Trained ST guy, and Trained ST is one way to encourage putting points in skill, how would you do something like Trained ST with shields?

I was just thinking today about having the defensive benefit from shields vary by making a skill roll, and then a "damage roll" that would be based off your "Trained ST with shields," so to speak.

Yeah, variable DB seems like a way to go. The extra rolls are a problem though.
