Default Size Comparison HVY against Modern Armor

There's been discussion here on how Ogre armor compares in size with modern armor. Since I haven't been able to find an actual PE or NAC HVY to photograph, I did the next best thing. I lined up some GHQ Micro Armor next to some Ogre minis for the comparison.

From left to right we have:a Soviet T-72, PE HVY, T-55 (on a 1"x1.5" base), PE HVY, M1A1 Abrams. Shot from the front.

This one is the same units shot from the side.

Next, the same modern units with both PE and NAC HVYs.

Some PE units in late WWII German Ambush Pattern Camo.

Some NAC units in a camo scheme I designed.

At one point I was missing NAC SHVYs and HVYs, so I experimented with using some GW EPIC minis. For the SHVY I was going to use the Space Marine Land Raider, and for the HVY, the Space Marine Rhino. In the background is a radar array that I scratchbuilt with some bits I had in my bits box.

Before the Engineers rules were released, I also experiments with Engineering Vehicles (ENGVs.) This is an Epic Rhino with an Ork roller on the front. I was also going to do some bridging units (with zip ties for the bridge pieces) but I never got around to those.

And finally, something just for grins. I found this model in a box of stuff at the local hobby shop. An alien EatAnter facing off against some NAC HVYs.

The comparison shots remind me of how damn huge the M1 Abrams is. I can also see why SJ has decided that the Ogre miniatures are nominally 1/300 scale, as opposed to GHQ's 1/285; the HVY is supposed to be slightly larger than an Abrams.

I really like the pics, and the camo schemes!

I should think the _O_ armor would be about the same dimensions and masses as modern armor -- it says something that attempts to build tanks much bigger than a current M1 have turned out to be overweight, underpowered, and given to breaking everything within LoS (suspension parts; bridges; etc.).

I was never a big fan of the PU heavy tank (though it has grown on me). So when I bought Ogre/GEV minis in the 80s, I used GHQ Merkavas for the heavy tank. They looked great, in my opinion. I’ll dig some of my ancient GEV miniatures and post them.

As an aside, look at the PU heavy tank in this ad: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OeAFWCHThu...er_48_0024.jpg

It’s the standard heavy tank chassis with a different turret. I think I would like it better than the standard model.

Hmm, I’m not liking that enormous 360 degree shot trap though...

I don’t think that “shot traps” are very relevant when tactical nuclear weapons are the main weapons system :)

I agree on the prototype Paneuro HVY vs. the one we actually got. The HVY always struck me as a bit "Tron"-ish, while Winchell's original design has a cool military sci-fi vibe to it.

I'm not sure, but the GHQ M551 Sheridan turret might be a good replacement. You'd have to remove the cupola though.

No, it's about the right shape, but I think it's going to be severely undersized. The M551 is a light tank.
