As a general note, please recognize that GURPS is not a high resolution model of real-world sociopolitical-economic interactions and does not pretend to be. Keeping this in mind and using GURPS as a way to game in a simplified imagining of the world will prevent many headaches.
This is why I suggested using the internet to just look up statistics. Wikipedia provides more resolution and accuracy than GURPS needs to produce a fun and consistent gaming experience.

Also that the GURPS Space system is meant to provide stats for Star Trek-like monolithic planets, not realistic Earthlike planets. It is no surprise that the system breaks down when you try to make it do something it wasn't ever meant to do.
