Default Polearm charge against a bowman

Beldros (adjDX 12) has a bow ready and is charge attacked by an orc with a spear (adjDX 11). Who attacks first?

From Melee, page 12. "On any turn when a pole weapon is being used in a charge attack or against a charge attack (or both), roll all the pole-weapon results first, in order of adjDX, before resolving any other attacks."

Indeed, and that sounds strange when against a character with a ranged weapon.

Agreed. Logically, the archer should fire first.

The system needs a general interrupt movement procedure to handle this and invisible wizard hitting with his staff somebody who's running past him, etc.

I believe I have seen some people state that they order actions by weapon type then adjDX. In other words...

- All missile weapon attacks occur first, in order of adjDX
- Next, all polearm attacks, in order of adjDX
- Next, everything else but spells in order of adjDX
- Finally, spells.

Seems reasonable to me but I think I'd lump polearm and thrown attacks together, ordered by adjDX.

I'd agree with this, though it's partially mitigated by the fact that the only way to disengage is to take a whole turn to do it, otherwise the character's movement is limited to shifting hexes.

The pole weapon preemption rule assumes the pole user is facing a hand-held weapon, were weapon reach matters. It should not matter against ranged weapons.

Relying on assumptions in rules, causes augments at the game table when people have different assumptions.

The more I think about this, the more I'm Ok with it. A polearm charger would usually start his turn less than 30 feet away from the archer he would charge. That's not a lot of time for the archer to draw his bow and aim at the guy running toward him with a long pointy stick. The time he spent drawing and aiming would certainly make him an easier target for the charge attack.

Compared with the alternatives, I'm jim-dandy with the polearm charge attack rule.
