Re: Ravens N' Pennies - GURPS Content Posts
Microwaves work fine in the cold. Microwave ovens have issues because when the parts inside the oven (turn tables, platters, etc) heat they heat unevenly (because no microwave oven heats anything evenly). If they are cold enough, the now hot parts expand faster than the rest of the platter, and thus explode.

So how do you avoid that when your microwave oven is in a cool environment? That would be something survivors would definitely want to know

But really, unless you leave the microwave out in freezing weather, you should generally be okay. |

I'd never seen a microwave with a turn table until I moved out, and my mother had THREE in the kitchen (serious believer in microwave cooking). I get the impression they're a little more expensive, but I've since seen so many turntables break and I haven't seen a microwave with a mixer break.

My microwave is overpowered. I always have to reduce the power level to 80% to prevent food from exploding. One of these days I'll have to figure out how to make this a permanent change!

I spent a winter without heat, so I wound up getting to see firsthand 'what happens when you try to microwave things when the temperature is in the thirties?'
Fortunately this was in Texas where it didn't actually get cold or it could have gotten unpleasant, but the microwave turn table exploding was a highlight |

That's not a bad idea. A hot meal is good as a fire in some cases.

Warming from the inside is certainly more effective and faster than from the outside.
