This is my first kickstarter. Is that funding in the shape of a cosine wave normal? It seems remarkably periodic and well behaved (if you exclude the front and the back).

Yes, this is normal. I think it was Pseudoboo who likened a Kickstarter's pattern to a bathtub. It's amazing just how many folks wait until the last minute.

That's a nice balance between organization and ease of reference.

Will there also be an alphabetical list of spells and spells by power investiture?

There's also people upping their pledges to get the add-ons, or to go to a higher level of funding now that they've seen what stretch goals have been unlocked. We've seen more than a few people moving to the $250 I Want It All! level from lower levels as more swag was added in.

But that means a more limited default audience. GURPS starts the round with a major handicap.

This has been my experience as well. However GURPS has it strengths in that people appreciate how it plays. I rarely hear how the GURPS rules sucks during play. GURPS has a distinct feel different than most RPGs. Generally more gritty and realistic without a lot of overhead (once the character is finished).

The vast majority of complaint all relate to what you have to do to make a character or what you need to do to prepare a campaign. And it boils down to people disliking rummaging through the numerous lists that are in GURPS.

Nymdok
Yep. Purchasing behavior is quite cyclical by both day and month within the year.

Also helps that for alot of people this is finishing on or just after a monthly payday

Fate, and Savage World seems solved this issue.

I am not advocating that SJ Game follow what Pinnacle and Evil Hat does. I am pointing there are other ways to support multiple settings than what TSR did in the late 80s and early 90s.

It appears there is a middle ground between going all in (example Forgotten Realm), and sporadic releases. Pazio has Golarion and Golarion products but the Adventure Paths rarely if ever require to you buy or learn anything that in those products.
