Comrade race vs. race specific weapons

Comrades usually belong to a certain criteria of class, saying that they can hold and use one item legal for <<insert class here>>,
But it doesn't make any mention as to what the race of the comrade is. Can these comrades hold any items that are specific to a certain race, like the bow with ribbons that is usable by elf only? What about the bad-ass bandana that is human only?

Unless a Comrade (Hireling, etc.) specifically mentions it has a Race, it doesn't, and therefore cannot use any Items restricted to that Race.
