Default Ogre Mk Vc 3D model

Merry Christmas!

Because everyone needs their own Ogre... I like the concept of the old Martian Metals Ogre Mk V (Vb?), and the "original" Mk VI rear hull... Soooooooo... (please forgive that I've never been a big fan of the way Ogre secondaries are represented).

Anyway, my idea for a Mk Vb. Or Vc.

Lo-res original model:

Ogre Mk Vc gray perspective
Ogre Mk Vc colored front perspective
Ogre Mk Vc colored rear perspective

New hi-res model: (43MB, might not load)
Ogre Mk Vc on Sketchfab
Ogre Mk Vc on p3d

I would post some screen caps but I can't figure out how to get the image tags to work. The link goes to p3d and opens up a model viewer in the browser.

It's still WIP. The biggest thing it needs is detailed treads... And I'll get to that soon enough. Any comments or criticisms are welcome.

That's pretty cool!

I like it. May have to try it in a game soon.

Thank you both

The first post will always have the most recent model link.

191.33 pts on the Cobb Calculator. Needs to have 4 external missiles to be 51.14% effective vs stock Mk V? So this is an inefficient design... (186.33 pts and 38.7% vs Mk V if only 3 external missiles, even worse)

2 Missile Racks Def 4 oo

4 Ext. Missiles Atk 6 Rng 5 Def 3 oooo

Sounds about right; missiles are more than just a game of quantity, they're also a game of bandwidth (number of shots per turn)...when it comes to Racks or Tubes for a custom unit, it's a game of picking your poison.

Racks are tougher, and permit far higher total missile counts...an Ogre with them that can keep its opponents at stand-off ranges is extremely dangerous (see also: Mk.IV)...but is easier to overwhelm, because whether it has 2 missiles or 20 it can only fire [# racks] missiles per turn.

Tubes on the other hand are easier to destroy and far more limited in number, but you have to peel every single one off the SOB individually...and a sufficiently threatened Ogre can dump its entire payload thereof in a single turn if it feels the need to.

I get that and appreciate the commentary. In some ways I'm glad of it's inefficiency. I generally think that official designs should be the best (and they've obviously been the most play-tested) and the designer can make better use of in-universe information. Fans tend to not take that into account, opting instead for optimized designs. The Cobb calculator seems to do a pretty decent job, regardless.

At the moment, I'm considering it being 68-72 tread, and 4 Move. It's obviously Mk VI treads... And meant to carry that load... But it has a Mk V primary chassis and Mk IV or Mk V secondary chassis... Noticeably less mass to move around. That puts its cost in the 201 - 241 range, and I'm OK with that.

I did a bunch more modeling. And the paneling to the treads, which was super easy (I'm a lousy modeler, so I'm always pleased with my results lol). I added wheels... Which is why I haven't updated the link. There's 500 wheels... Which killed my polygon count and made for a prohibitively large file size. I need to go back and optimize them and maybe cheat on the inner wheels lol. Hopefully tomorrow.

Whoops, sounds like I read you wrong. I was trying to help with what sounded like "I'm confused, why is it considered less inefficient", so my heartfelt apologies if I came across as patronizing or anything like that. :(

You are just fine, I was not offended at all. I always appreciate commentary.

My only confusion was not from "why" it would be inefficient, just in how it would manifest, and how bad. I haven't played with the calculator in years.

At Move 4, there's a huge disparity in odds against Mk V, Mk Vi, and Dopp, between when ramming is allowed and not. Originally I was thinking of it as a Mk 4.5. Now more of a Mk 5.5.

But really I just wanted to make a 3D model based on these components I like because I like how it looks.

Nothing wrong with that! "Because it looks / sounds cool" has given humanity a lot of stuff, including the original Ogre silhouette.
