And I darn near went blind – and had heart palpitations and difficulty breathing – when the sambal oelek I was cooking up became a chemical weapon and gassed me. The recipe failed to mention that there's such a thing as peppers that are too hot . . . or (and this is mostly my fault) that you cover it to cook it and don't lift the lid until the paste has cooled to room temperature.

There are reasons I'm not allowed to use the grill, or the stove, or to be in the same room as a power tool, or within arms-reach of an un-powered tool.

Some people exist as an example of what not to do.

He believes that 1d+1 burn is about right, because each hit averages 4.5 damage, which isn't quite enough to cripple an arm or a leg (though the potential is there), but three hits are enough to put you in the hospital with shock and have you off work for two weeks to heal.

I don't recommend reality-checking this to anyone.
Ouch.

A related piece of data - having a burst of petroleum flame flare across one's face really hurts, and even fairly shallow second degree burns take weeks to heal. Also, burned hair smells really bad.

Been there, done that, although not as severely. Also a coworker fell and dipped her hand in the fryer, that was no good

Ouch! Worst kitchen injury I ever had was bacon grease splash out of the pan and onto my bare foot. Could not wear my shoe for days due to blistering.

Sometimes when I'm frying bacon or similar little bits of oil splash on my arm. It's painful (probably enough to cause shock) but there's no serious burn if I quickly wipe it off on my shirt, so probably not 1 HP worth of damage, because it probably happens a dozen times cooking up a batch of bacon and I'm not crippled by the cumulative damage, and I definitely don't have 24 HP. We all get 1 DR (enough to stop the minimum for burning damage) if there is an armor divisor, so maybe small flecks of burning oil have armor divisor 0.5?

Or they just don't do even 1 point of damage. Lots of things that don't cause meaningful damage are painful enough to plausibly cause shock.

Is this going to turn into "Which parts of the book have we personally reality tested?"

I'm not going first because I don't have the book.
