Default Pyramid #3/93: Cops and Lawyers

This town's so rotten
The precinct set up PayPal
Just for taking bribes
— An angry rookie
Sorry for the delay in getting you this issue of Pyramid, but after it robbed a bank and our legal team got it released from holding, it jumped bail and fled the state. It was only due to the actions of several brave officers and fast-thinking lawyers that we managed to get Pyramid #3/93: Cops and Lawyers back into custody and onto warehouse23.com.

And I'm glad we finally got this one up, because a legal system is one of the things that every "civilized" setting has in common, from old-school fantasy kingdoms to far-future spaceports. Whether the party is running from the law or working with them, there's always room for nifty ideas like these:
  • We count on the police to keep the peace, but sometimes things boil over badly enough to incite Mass Combat in the City. David Pulver shows how to use GURPS Mass Combat, along with the new "Law Enforcement Officer" feature, to pit officers against criminals, terrorists, or worse.

  • Most societies regulate dangerous equipment and activities, so it's unlikely that people with powers would be Above the Law. Christopher Rice looks at the legal and social ramifications of powers, showing how their Legality Classes fit into a game's austerity and a setting's Control Rating.

  • But this issue isn't just about modern day! In fact, one of the most interesting legal structures can be found in the Sultans, Shurta, and the Courts of the classical Islamic world. The unique demands and assumptions of each court lead to surprising religious and secular interactions.

  • Uniquely, the U.S. Coast Guard works as much with law-enforcement agencies as with its fellow military branches, and the Marine Protector and Dolphin are crucial to both capacities. In this month's Eidetic Memory, David Pulver gives details and stats for this helicopter and patrol boat duo, along with adventure seeds where they'll shine.

  • The concept of "Super Prisons" is key to most GURPS Supers games, and Mega-Max! is here to keep your bad guys safely locked away. Maybe. Okay, look, it's written by J. Edward Tremlett so you already know there are evil conspiracies afoot, but I'd hate to spoil things for your players.

  • Both historical and fantasy games call for Judicium Dei -- the idea of "trial by God," where the prisoner must survive an ordeal or prevail in combat. Its repercussions vary greatly by the setting; in a world with active gods, it may be your best hope, but if it's just a lie that others have swallowed, you may be doomed.

  • And we just arraigned our usual features, including a Random Thought Table that balances player satisfaction against compelling legal drama, and a Short Bursts that wants to sell you some delicious mycoprotein.

I have to say, David's "Mass Combat in the City" is a brilliant concept and I <3 the hell out of it. It's gonna get a lot of use in my Aeon game coming up.

Is Minority Group [-10] and Second-Class Citizen [-5] or vice versa? I recall it being the former.
