Default Questions about purchasing levels

Hello, just finished my first game and had a lot of fun. Had a few things come up while we were playing and was hoping to get clarification.

Is there a max number of levels a player can purchase during their turn? Can you combine gold and items to reach the 1,000 or does it have to be all gold or all items? Can purchasing a level be done at any time and/or place?

My apologies if this was answered somewhere else, I tried searching and couldn't find anything.

Default Re: Questions about purchasing levels

From the rules:
Quote:
Spend gold and/or discard Items worth at least 1,000 gold pieces to go up a level (see p. 15).
And:
Quote:
On your turn, you can spend 1,000 gold pieces to buy a level. Items can also be spent, counting as their face value. Discard the cards. If you spend only Items, and they are worth more than 1,000, you don’t get change! You can not buy the winning level.
That "and/or" says that you can spend all gold, all Items, or a combination. The point about spending only Items also implies what was already directly stated earlier: You can spend both, and if you do, you will get change. This happens if you're trying to get rid of 800 gold worth of Items and have only a 300 or 500 gold token, and you can't break up the Items to be less. In that case, you'd get change because you were using a gold token as well to purchase the Level.

Since this action is something you can do at any time during your turn, except during combat, and no restriction is given on how often you can do this, you can buy as many Levels as you want as long as you don't try to buy Level 10. So, if you're Level 4 and have enough gold and/or Items to hand in, you can buy 5 Levels, but not 6. A Level 2 munchkin can buy up to 7 Levels, but not 8.
