Default SJG's FnordCon! April 6-7.

Hi!
I am hoping to coordinate with other SJG fans going to the con to:
- Possibly have a Friday and/or Saturday night get together.
- Share tips and tricks about Austin and travel and accommodations to/in the city.
- Possibly coordinate play sessions of games we are most interested in.
-Have a place for more information on the con to be collected and dispersed.

Here is the the link for the con info and sign up.

Also feel free to say if your attending, and what your main interests might be!

EDIT:
I myself am a big SJ Games fan, and I am most excited to hang out with other fans and play Munchkin!

GLHF!
-Putney

There are certainly plenty of places around town for a few (or a few dozen) people to sit around, have a beverage and a snack, and hang out. The trick will be finding one that doesn't have live music on those nights (assuming you want to chat and maybe play games).

Fortunately, the Austin airport is VERY close to the convention site - less than 10 minutes' drive unless the traffic is awful - and there are quite a few hotels near the airport and several more over by the interstate. The closest hotel to the convention itself is a Super 8 that is nominally walking distance, but I wouldn't advise walking as you'll have to cross a pretty major highway along with its feeder roads. It's probably not a bad idea to try to arrange carpools with other people at your hotel to avoid totally filling up the venue's parking.

Public transit in Austin exists and the convention venue is reasonably close to a stop for Capital Metro route 228, if you want to Google the route map and schedule. I would honestly not advise counting on public transit to/from the airport; there are bus routes but the ones with airport service tend to go directly downtown, not over near where we will be, and are often quite packed. Austin has exactly one light rail line and it's across town from the office and convention site, so no help there.

Weather in April can be anything from chilly and wet to sunny and hot; check the weather reports a day or two before you leave. Obviously, we hope for mild weather.

It is likely that this convention will fall within wildflower season in the Austin area. The most prevalent (and striking) wildflower in this part of the state is the bluebonnet, which is the state flower, but we have many others that turn medians and fields lots of pretty colors. We've had a wet and reasonably mild winter, so there's a good chance that this will be a very good year for flowers; if you have time on Friday, you might drive around a bit - there's a lot of green space in Austin and much of that space gets very colorful for the month or so that wildflowers bloom here.

Austin is a bit of a foodie town and you can find dishes for most tastes all over. Again, the convention site is a bit off the beaten path, but there are plenty of options a reasonably short drive away.

I am hoping to go to the convention. I'm most excited about playing Ogre and trying The Fantasy Trip.

I'm going to be staying in the Super 8 myself. I was originally planning to walk to/from the convention, but Andrew's comment has me wondering if I should now. Anyone else staying there who has transportation?

I am staying at the super 8 and was considering renting a car at the airport. Worst case, we could split a lyft.

Don't get me wrong - depending on the weather, it's entirely walkable if you're careful about dodging traffic. I just checked Google Earth and there are sidewalks the whole way.

There are also usually quite a few panhandlers who hang out under that overpass. I don't want to judge your comfort level with those folks, but it's something else you'll want to consider. If there's a group walking together, that probably can factor into your choice.

And yes, both Lyft and Uber are options.

Andrew,

Any word on when there will be a detailed schedule of events? Also, will we be able to sign up to run games, or just play in them?

More details will be revealed over the next two months. (Meaning I don’t know yet myself.)

Airfare, hotel, and membership arranged. (I had considered driving down; but three days transit down and three back for a two-day con, across the Mountain West, by myself, *just* didn't seem like a Good Idea.)

Passing along something that I did which might help forum-goers recognize one another... for the name on my badge, I included my forum name in parentheses. Just a suggestion/thought.
