Managing the cards at the start of the game and end of each phase
From the game rules, i understand that each player can draw 4 cards each from the Door and Treasure Decks.
1) Is it ok to not play any of the 8 cards and proceed to kick the door? 2) With the 5-card requirement before the end of each turn, does it violate the rules to keep the curse cards and any monster cards for charity? 3) Also, if our game does not practice charity, is it ok to discard these cards to the regular discard pile? Appreciate your kind advice please. |

1. Yes, you are not required to play any cards to the table before kicking down the door (and sometimes, the cards do not favor you and you cannot play anything to the table anyway).
2. You may choose to do whatever you wish with your cards and give away anything in your hand as Charity (until you are back down to 5 cards) if you wish, but be aware that that can often come back to haunt you. 3. Charity is mandatory, so that question does not apply, however as the rules state, if you are the lowest or tied for lowest Level, your Charity goes to the appropriate discard piles. |

Charity is an important aspect of the game and to have a House Rule that disregards Charity will unbalance the game. The Charity phase makes Players analyze their cards and decide if giving a certain card as Charity will hinder their chance of winning. It also makes the game less painful for the poor schmuck that is Level 3 while everyone else is Level 9.

Tks for your replies.
In the event if all players have the same level after the phase, are the excess cards distributed evenly among the players for Charity? |

If all players are the same level, the excess cards are discarded.

Re: Managing the cards at the start of the game and end of each phase
If there are multiple players at the lowest-Level and the turn player is not one of them, then he does distribute the cards evenly amongst the lowest-Level players, though.
To consolidate all the previous info, here's how to handle Charity: At the end of each of your turns, after you have decided you don't want to play any more cards: If you are the lowest-Level (even if you share the lowest-Level), discard cards until you have reached your hand limit (typically 5). If you are not the lowest-Level, give cards from your hand to the lowest-Level player/s until you have reached your hand limit. If there are multiple players of the lowest-Level, you must give cards out as evenly as possible, but you decide who gets what. |

Re: Managing the cards at the start of the game and end of each phase
Do you mean all the other players, or all the players? For all the other, then you distribute the cards as evenly as you can (as is specified in the rules). If you mean all the players: Any time the player whose turn it is tied for the lowest level, then he must discard his excess cards, and can't give them to anyone.
