3X Car Wars Web Site: Missing Roadway Templates
From 1997 to 1999, Car Wars player Doug Maltais operated the 3X Car Wars Web site that was removed from the Internet in 2000.
3X Car Wars http://home1.gte.net/dmaltais/3XCW I have a complete archive of the 3X Car Wars Web site except I am missing the Roadway Templates, 3X Car Wars scale highway sections, that were on the 3X Car Wars Web site. Car Wars player Jim Businger created the Roadway Templates. The Roadway Templates were on the 3X Car Wars Web site in a Zip folder and as a Microsoft Word file. The Internet Archive Wayback Machine did not capture a functional Zip folder, and did not capture the Microsoft Word file. Internet Archive https://archive.org/ Internet Archive Wayback Machine https://web.archive.org/ Does anyone have a copy of the Roadway Templates that can be shared with me? Thank you. Sincerely, Michael 3X Car Wars - Modeling Tips http://home1.gte.net/dmaltais/3XCW/modeling.html Freeway Fun (Roadway Templates) A super-helpful duellist by the name of Jim Businger has donated some great paper templates for 3XCW-scale highway sections. In Jim's words: I've always like the MAD MAX part of this game, so here's the first installment of something you and adversaries (freinds) might have a little fun with. I call it Freeway Fun. I created it using MS-Word 7.0 (Office 95). I use continuous 8.5" x 11" paper in an IBM proprinter III to print the five pages (page 1: shoulder w/ditch / page 2: five lanes / page 3: median w/ditch / pages 4: five lanes / page 5: shoulder w/ditch). The "lane" on the first and last page is where you park when your car breaks down (it should have debris and wrecked cars). The grey band is the gravel at the edge of the pavement. The gravel and beyond (as well as the median) should present a handling hazard at speed. Narrower freeways can be made by separating the 1st and 5th pages and overlapping them on the lane pages. I don't recommend printing this on a LASER printer, as they usually have unprintable areas at the margins. Download File: CW3XFF1.ZIP (10K) http://home1.gte.net/dmaltais/3XCW/CW3XFF1.ZIP You are free to use and re-distribute this file. If you have trouble unpacking the compressed version of the file (many do), you can grab the original instead: Download File: cw3xFF1.doc (163K). http://home1.gte.net/dmaltais/3XCW/cw3xFF1.doc

Re: 3X Car Wars Web Site: Missing Roadway Templates
As you noted the Wayback Machine had a .doc file compressed in a zip file which isn't readable. You can enable the reading of Office 95 doc files (it's buried down in the file options on Word), but even that doesn't seem to be readable.
However, if one extracts the doc file and renames it to a .txt file and opens it with a program that can show non-printable characters (I used Notepad++), you get a bit more info. There are more than a few things that look like they are for configuring and communicating with a device. So I *think* that it might actually be the right file, just that the file is very specific to the printer that is mentioned, and may not be useable on any others.

Re: 3X Car Wars Web Site: Missing Roadway Templates
Magesmiley,
Thank you for the reply with useful information. Looking in my large Car Wars e-file archive, I discovered I did download the Zip folder from the 3X Car Wars Web site in 1998. I was able to open the Zip folder using 7-Zip. The Microsoft Word file inside the Zip folder could not be opened with current editions of Microsoft Word. Perhaps autoduellists who are also computer graphics artists can recreate the Road Templates using modern graphics software. The 3X Car Wars Web site is now archived on my Web site. 3X Car Wars Archive SWAT HQ https://www.seanet.com/~owenmp/3x-car-wars/index.html Sincerely, Michael compressed in a zip file which isn't readable. Re: 3X Car Wars Web Site: Missing Roadway Templates
The doc file has a legitimate MS-CFB header, but the internal ident is DC A5 rather than the expected EC A5 for a .doc file.
Someone with better word-fu might be able to extract the data, but it is beyond me presently. |
