Default Assigning base color to a new monster

In page 6 of the rules, under exploring, paragraph 5, we are instructed to role the Monster Die to determine the monster's base color. The rules don't state any handling for the case in which the color rolled doesn't match one of the colors someone is playing. It strikes me one could either 1) Keep rolling until a played color appears or 2) Let the current player choose a color as though all bases of the rolled color are in play. I wondered whether playtesters or early players had settled on a preferred approach or whether you invented something even sneakier - use some other random chooser appropriate to the number of players maybe?

Thanks.

Actually in that same section it says that if the color comes up is one that is not being used, the person who rolled can pick a color for the base. In fact to quote the rules:

If no bases of the rolled color are available, you get to choose the base – but the player of the chosen color does not get a DxM! If no bases at all are available, the highest-level monster (counting enhancers) is removed from play, freeing a base for the new monster. If there is a tie for highest level, remove all tied monsters! This means that the maximum number of monsters in any game is 3 times the number of players.

From rulebook, page 6 number 5:
If no bases of the rolled color are available, you get to choose the base – but the player of the chosen color does not get a DxM!

Since no bases are available the colors no one is playing, the person rolling chooses the color.

It does tell you what to do.

Too true, too true. I was reading "available" too narrowly to mean only if they were all filled up. Equally unavailable if they are in the box out of use or in an expansion that has yet to be released.

Thanks.
