Excellent. I was wondering which one b-dog had intended, and I'm glad you clarified the two approaches.

I would reinterpret option 2 as the equivalent of a boxed and focused steampunk game (although I don't suspect official boxed games are going to be as prolific as we first imagined in the discussions before the DFRPG release.)

In Pyramid 3-82 there's the Sorcerer class. They have good enough range to match muskets & flintlock pistols. They can do more damage too.
I recommend them for any DF game, but especially a steampunk one.
