To specifically answer curiosity, I’ve run GURPS campaigns that were roleplay heavy and sometimes had less than one roll per hour in extended obviously non-threatening situations. That meant Luck for every roll for every PC that had Luck, often making them better at things they were middling on than non-Lucky specialists. I’m not complaining — I’ve made some changes and it’s never been an issue again for me, and hasn’t been an issue in games I played in. The mechanic was just a bad match for that play style.

Serendipity often doesn't work out like you'd expect on the table because of the more concrete mechanics of GURPS. I'd discuss the character concept with your GM before game and go over how much of your CP you're investing so that you both have some sense of what that will translate into in play. And roll with the punches if Serendipity doesn't work out the way you want a lot of the time.

In our last session, Thridi (the character with two levels of Serendipity) was on the hunt for some missing slippers (a fae thing... their quests are unusual). He arrived at the gnome cobbler's shop to find thousand's of shoes, boot, and slipper piled up in a giant mess. He chose to use Serendipity to find the slippers in the pile. In reality, the slippers weren't there, but there was a secret door behind one of the shelves that led to further clues. I narrated it such that he searched that shelf first and the secret door opened. We both felt that this was an elegant and appropriately serendipitous occurrence.

His second use was when he faced a locked door and happened to have some good-quality lockpicks in his pouch. He felt that this was an "uninspired" usage. I thought it was mundane, but within the spirit of the advantage.

The player suggests uses for Serendipity more than I do, though I usually have an idea or two in my back pocket for each session.
