Original stats or Spaceships stats?
I'm wondering if there is any important reason to prefer the stats generated from GURPS Spaceships over given stats when converting spaceships from the basic vehicle rules.
Specifically, I've converted spaceships from GURPS Tales of the Solar Patrol to GURPS Spaceships stats, and they don't match up. For instance, a Patrol Ship is given these (selected) stats in Tales of the Solar Patrol: ST/HP 250; Hnd/SR +4/3; HT 13; LWt. 10,000; Load 200; Occ 10+2ASV; DR 100; Cost $90M. But my conversion ends up with the following stats, which cannot really be made any closer to the original: dST/HP 70; Hnd/SR -1/5; HT 13; LWt. 1,000; Load 31.2; Occ 12ASV; dDr 20; Cost $152.5M Now, the Spaceships rules generate a relatively realistic set of stats, and frankly, I'm not interested in realism in Tales of the Solar Patrol. But my question is whether there is any other important reason to prefer the Spaceships stats over the original stats. That is, use the Spaceships rules for playing, but use decade-scale versions of the original stats. (Weapon stats would also have to be converted.) dST/HP 25; Hnd/SR +4/3; HT 13; LWt. 10,000; Load 200; Occ 10+2ASV; DR d10; Cost $90M. What problems, if any, might I run into? |

Re: Original stats or Spaceships stats?
They don't seem to jive very well at first blush, what with the Tales Patrol Ship being SM +8 and 10,000 tons (vs 1,000 for Spaceships).
It appears to fit in well at Spaceships SM +8 though. Here's a rough design: Audie Murphy-Class Patrol Ship V1 (TL6+3^) It has a 1,000-ton (SM +8) streamlined hull about 150 feet in length. Front Hull [1-2] Light Alloy Armor (dDR 10). [3-4!] Major Batteries (fixed 300 MJ beam each). [5-6] Cargo Holds (50 tons capacity each). [core] Control Room (C8 computers, comm/sensor 6, and only two control stations). Central Hull [1-2] Light Alloy Armor (dDR 10). [3] Cargo Hold (50 tons capacity). [4!] Major Battery (turret with 300 MJ beam). [5!] Light Force SCreen (dDR 70 when powered). [6] Fission Reactor (one Power Point). [core] Habitat (4 bunkrooms with total life support and one cabin with total life support). Rear Hull [1-2] Light Alloy Armor (dDR 10). [3-4] Fission Reactors (one Power Point each). [5-6!] Hot Reactionless Engines (1G acceleration each). TL Spacecraft dST/HP Hnd/SR HT Move LWt. Load SM Occ dDR Range Cost PILOTING/TL12 (HIGH-PERFORMANCE SPACECRAFT) 6+3^ Patrol Ship 70 -1/5 12 2G/c 1,000 151 +8 10ASV* 10* -- $53.9M * Add dDR 70 if force screen is powered up. Air speed is 3,500 mph. |

Re: Original stats or Spaceships stats?
The TotSP ships are mostly too dense and very inconsistent. The conqueror is perfectly reasonable and the patrol cruiser is believable, but the scout-scourer and lifeboat are apparently made of nearly solid gold or osmium. The pacifier is just ridiculous.

Re: Original stats or Spaceships stats?
Probably not. Personally, if I was planning to use Spaceships combat, I would use Spaceships construction, too. The more detail you introduce to ship-to-ship combat, the more the inconsistencies are likely to show.
