Where the first place I saw it was in GURPS. Since then, I think it's shown up more often in video games, usually next to the health bar.

I was thinking of, say, lapis virtutis, stone of virtue (meaning the power to do something), or lapis animatus, stone with a spirit/soul.

You might want to look into Santeria and Voudoun. Both religions have magical objects that can be fed energy and work as reservoirs of energy. I'm not a practitioner of either faith, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think you might find something similar enough to the concept of a powerstone to be workable.
