Anything I could do sheet-wise would be equivalent to changing those options.

A better option would be to set your printer to black only printing, if you can. I'm not sure exactly how you'd do that, not knowing your printer, but looking under your print settings and/or printing defaults would be a good place to start. I have a CcMmYK printer and this is what I do when I either don't need to print in color or I start to run low on, or out of, one or more of the non-black inks. The reason this would be better is because your printer should be able to print greys in black only mode via halftone, so you effectively get a greyscale printout but only use black ink.
My cheapass printer (HP Deskjet 720C) doesn't print very well in B&W mode. I've done it before, but I don't like it, since the resolution goes south VERY quickly, and you can easily see the black dots used to make the grey.

What i've done, is take the standard sheet, copy it under a new name, turn off shading, and change every background color to white and every text color to white. It's not hard, but I have to repeat it each time I format my computer (and it happens quite often, since I'm always trying new OS/linux distros/etc)

If you track down the sheetoptions.ini file and back it up you can then restore it with little difficulty. That file contains all the settings you've made to character sheets, and it resides in the same place as gca.ini (FAQ#3 talks about locating the gca.ini file).

Announcing Phoenix 1.39 (requires GCA 4.0.371 or later).

Phoenix is always available from: http://www.motoslave.net/thom/gca/phoenix/

Note that with this release, I've addition another styling variant, a completely monochromatic black and white color-scheme version. So you now have the basic version and two increasingly monochromatic versions to choose from.
  • Phoenix: The basic version of Phoenix (i.e. the same old Phoenix you've always known).
  • Phoenix (Grey): A basic version variant with a more monochromatic grey color-scheme; it's not completely monochromatic though, there are several uses of color left in the sheet.
  • Phoenix (BW): A basic version variant with a completely monochromatic black and white color-scheme.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix 1.39 highlights:
  • Changed the Size and Speed/Range Table block to support distance/length measurement scaling. As usual, this includes metric conversion whenever the Metric statistic is set to 1.

Announcing Phoenix 1.40 (requires GCA 4.0.371 or later).

Phoenix is always available from: http://www.motoslave.net/thom/gca/phoenix/

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix 1.40 highlights:
  • Fixed a bug in the weight scaling code, introduced in Phoenix 1.28, that fails to properly scale US Customary weights that are greater than or equal to 1000 lb and less than 2000 lb.

I've tweaked Thom's Bookish Layout template, adding Wikisite format as an option, and some optional but decidedly non-house-style attack and defenses blocks at the bottom of the sheet (defaulting to Off).

http://www.motoslave.net/gcarepo/view.php?pkgid=67

The (optinal) attack and defense blocks were added after I found myself really wanting them. :) The format for these blocks is based on the format used in the Dungeon Fantasy statblocks, with an option to turn on for more detailed information.

A possible bug in the otherwise-delightful Phoenix 1.40:

If I tick the option to show the notes part of the campaign log, it seems to break Phoenix -- attempting to print or print preview times out.

Thanks!

I'd need to have the actual GCA character file (.gca4) for testing to be sure, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that the character in question has a log entry that exceeds the full printable height of sheet. Does that sound about right?

The opposite -- it's blank. I'll send the file.

Thanks.

Got the file. It worked fine for me with all settings at the defaults, except that the campaign log had been enabled. If that's not how your sheet is configured, and it probably isn't, please send me your sheetoptions.ini file, so I can use your settings.

Will do. The main campaign log works; it's the 'notes' part that does not.
