Default Judge's Badge--no way does it mean this!

Please help us settle an argument. My son says that the Munchkin Apocalypse Judge Dredd booster pack card, Judge's Badge, which allows you to recover a one shot that you just played once per combat means that DURING the combat, he can play a one shot item and then say "I am the law!" ...recover that item and use it again during THE SAME COMBAT. I say it means once that combat is OVER and the one shot item goes in the discard pile, he can say "I am a law" and get that one shot item back. He says because the card says "once per combat" and not "once after the combat" that he is right.

I agree with your son. "Once per combat" means during the combat.

I can't imagine it meaning anything else, either. If it were meant to be after the combat, the wording would have been more specific to prevent re-use.

My take was that it wasn't "used" until the combat is over, therefore unable to be recovered until discarded AFTER the battle is totalled for each side--the benefit being that he can use that one shot item in another battle later. He will be thrilled that yoinfuysbagreed with him:(

I know the intent of the card is to be used as you guys said, but I understand why she had this question. I would have asked the same thing.

Here is a quote from munchkin man in another topic

"All one-shot Items that provide a bonus last the entire combat. Put the card out along with the other cards that are part of the combat and discard it when the combat is over. "

And here is a copy from the rules "Discard the monster card, including any enhancers and one-shot items played, and draw treasure"

So had Andrew not gave his official ruling, I would of agreed with the OP and not her son because the rules say it isn't in the discard pile until end of combat. I realize that makes the badge not work as intended, but it seems to be worded that way.

PS: i don't have the badge in front of me for exact wording though, so I may have misunderstood this scenario.
