Default Fright check causes -30 pt disadvantage

Through a series of misadventures, my Will was reduced to 2. I had both cowardice -4 and combat paralysis -2 modifiers to my roll, which was 18, giving me a margin of failure of 22. I then rolled 3d6 and got 18. My total roll was 40, giving me the -30 point disadvantage.

Of course, that never happened, to me, or to anyone, right?

Yeah, I don't think that character will willingly go anywhere near a dungeon ever again.

With a Will of 2, it's actually pretty easy to convince them to do just about anything "willingly". But yeah, somebody with such crippling psychiatric problems has no business wandering around outside, let alone entering a dungeon.

While the series of unfortunate events described above is certainly statistically unlikely, I tend to assume that the length of the Fright Check table, with accordingly terrible effects at the top end, is a sign that some Fright Checks should be rolled at stonkingly large penalties — in horror games if not in Dungeon Fantasy, anyway.

You walk round a corner and meet a kaiju chewing on the still-twitching corpses of your nearest and dearest, and it’s between you and the exit, and you are not going to pass that Fright Check, absent a roll of 3 at least. And yes, ending up with 30 extra points of disadvantages should be on the table.

Every time I see something I don't understand in DFRPG the best explanation is that it was ported from GURPS without trimming the bits. GURPS Terror does indeed have levels that modify the fright check roll, and therefore modifies the disadvantage roll.

I don't recall if I ever hit a 40 on the table but I've had some dynamic failures.
