Running Away
I am fighting King Tut. I cannot beat him and therefore have to Run Away. I have a Hireling in play. Must I decide to use the Hireling's ability before the die roll or can I attempt the die roll and then use the ability if it fails? Since cards like Invisibility Potion specify that you can use it after the roll I assume the answer is you have to declare before rolling.

Re: Running Away
Exactly. From the point you throw the Run Away die, you can't play normal cards or activate abilities (such as the Hireling discard) until you either successfully escape or suffer the Bad Stuff. Thus, the only cards that can be played at that point are ones that specifically state that's when they can be played.

Re: Running Away
Follow-up question: Do you still suffer King Tut's 2-level-loss if you sacrifice a Hireling for an automatic escape? I would think so.

Re: Running Away
Yes. An automatic escape is still an escape.
