The only way I've found for dragons to win is to use pushback and trample.

Very true. A large monster with wings who doesn't push back, trample or fly is not really competing.

Where everyone moves and what everyone does in combat can determine who lives and dies, as much or more than individual figures' ability levels, which is not true of many other RPGs, especially the majority that don't even use combat maps, or games where map positions don't have particularly significant effects on outcomes.

If you don't want to die a lot, you may want to start by playing several PvP arena combats and/or Death Test for fun with the expectation characters will tend to die. That's probably the most fast/effective/fun way to learn tactics.

If/when your players learn to understand tactics and what situations are low-risk or likely death, then they will be much more liable to be able to have a PC survive serious campaign play. And sometimes team-conscious strong players can manage to help weaker players stay alive.

Effective teamwork can go a long way. So can simply bringing enough NPC comrades along. Strength lies in numbers, as the Thorsz says.

All very true. Unlike most fantasy rpg's, nearly everyone is vulnerable to attack from nearly everyone, so it is important to learn tactical approaches to avoiding situations where a foe gets a high-odds shot at you with any weapon that is unlikely to be stopped by your armor.

Strategist's side shifts second to side.
