Define cards in play?
We had a card come up that said card in play, is that all cards on table andnot in hand?

You are correct:
Cards on the table are in play. Cards in your hand are not in play. |

To be exact, it is all the cards you have on the table except for Curses you are keeping to remind you of a lingering effect.
Your Race, Class, Items (whether in use or sideways), Hirelings, etc. are all in play. |

For reference, this is defined on the first page of the rules under the section "Card Management." It also mentions Curses that have continuing effects, but it is not meant to indicate that continuing Curse cards may be used for the purposes of discarding in order to power some ability or meet some other requirement to discard cards.
