Default Energy Reserves in DF

In playing with DF5 I've run into a problem with how we've implemented Energy Reserves. If a character takes a Familiar, which grants an appropriate ER with the GBF limitation and then tries to take the same ER without that limitation from the DF4 Power-Ups nothing happens. I haven't tested if the reverse is true, but I suspect it is. Is there something that I'm missing? Or is this something that we need to look at figure out a work-around? Thanks.

The problem is that within GCA traits are unique, with the only real problem here being that sometimes the traits are added automatically with a limitation applied.

If you added the ER first then the Familiar you'd get a warning about duplicate traits followed by GCA duplicating the trait, then attaching the wrong trait to the character (ugh). The cure might be to change the name of the ER's that are Granted by Familiars, which might not be too tough.
