Monster Color and DxM

Do you get a DxM card whenever a monster you own is killed? Or just when you kill a monster you own?

And is there a reason why you would choose someone else to own a monster over yourself?

Only when you kill your own monster. And a very good reason: if it's a big monster, you don't want it hanging around if it happens to move into your room, or vice versa.
