Blink Other
Quick question. What are the mechanics of Blink Other? Our congregation of gamers is confused about the wording, as it states that it is "As Blink, but useable on others". Some of the congregation believe it can only be cast on allies, but a portion of us believe that it is used to teleport the attacker away, hopefully protecting the user from harm.
Does anyone have insight on this? |

Re: Blink Other
if it was meant to be used only on allies it would say so. it is meant to be used on people other than yourself. to use it on yourself you use blink.
remember it is a blocking spell, so it is used on someone who is being attacked and not attacking. |

Re: Blink Other
But is that not true that both Command and Fumble affect the Attacker (ie. the person attacking the user), thus not involving casting the spell on the person who is being attacked? (I really hope that made sense)

Block spell (Mp12): "A Blocking spell is cast instantly as a defense against either a physical attack or another spell." fumble (Mp38): "The subject automatically fumbles the action he is taking. Regular range penalties apply. If the action is an attack or parry, roll on the Critical Miss Table." fumble states it how it works, any action the targets takes fumbles. they could be moving towards you, jumping, sitting, etc. blocking spells are instant spells basically. you cast them in response to something, normally an attack but what is in the spell description overrides this! command can be cast at anytime you want, only once per turn though, so we could be fighting and as my defense I choose to command you to "fall down!" and now you are on the floor. or I can do that on my turn, or I can use a wait and do it in response to you coming to close. same with fumble, and the same with blink. blink other is great for when you want to help your party avoid attacks. and using it on an enemy is something you need to think about. your enemy is about to do a slam? blink them since the slam is like an attack on both people ( I would rule it that way). you need them alive but another PC wants to kill them? blinky blink blink. edit:: also note, there is no such thing as allies, spells are either meant to work on you or others and not "allies" or "enemies". If I want to heal my enemies I can do so because the spell does not differentiate between them. Last edited by zoncxs; 03-06-2012 at 09:58 PM. Reason: ally or enemy does not exist for magic. unless the spell says so. |

Re: Blink Other
I wouldn't allow it to be used on an unwilling subject without a resistance roll. I realize that's not what the spell says, but it's more consistent with spells like Levitate, Teleport Other, etc.
The question of whether Blocking spells can be cast at other times (not as part of a defense) is an interesting one, and one to which I've never heard a definitive answer. |

Re: Blink Other
Ok, thanks for the input Zoncxs, that makes sense, i'll take that into account when our group once again gets into the debate regarding the spell.

Re: Blink Other
I just came across this wondering if blocking spells could be used when not threatened. In our case, you wake up strapped to a table. Can you use Blink to get free?

Blocking spells are an Active Defense, the "magical equivalent of a block, parry, or dodge."
