I stand corrected on both counts; my memory was hazy for the latter, and I never saw the former. Still, I wonder how many forumites have bought GCA, and how many have not, and see if that fraction, assuming it's representative of GURPS players as a whole, can let us know how many GURPS players there are.

Most of them?

Though that does raise how they found out about DFRPG. Which goes to my earlier point. Just telling one or two people about DFRPG outside of the forums was enough to significantly boost sales in your local area.

Anyway SJ Games now has a lot of data to at least have an opinion of how those supporters found out.

On the other hand moderation here is why I am here as much as I am.
A lot of other places are too annoying to bother with. Flaming and personal attacks are one thing most people think about but thread derailment is a pet peeve. It is annoying to follow a thread about an idea when there are tons of side topics to wade through.

Not really. Kickstarter gives you recommendations. If you've backed other RPGs in the past it would have shown you DFRPG. And there are a lot of other venues (FB, Twitter, etc.) for GURPS to pop up on.

~1,600 backers is also not a very large number.

I'm glad to hear that the SJ Games staff are getting rested and recharged, because it seems like they have a lot of work ahead of them. Over four hundred pages of material to be edited, three entirely new supplements to be written, maps to make, dice and bases to produce...

It's actually kind of impressive that they're shooting for a May 2017 release, given all that.

Well I got nothing from Twitter, FB or any other social media other than KH and RPK.

Also I got nothing from Kickstarter despite ONLY supporting RPGs. Kickstarter has never emailed or messaged me and I don't go there without a reason. Instead i get ads on FB for KS products that look like they belong in an in-flight magazine. Wow a backpack, wow a revolutionary jacket.

My friend for example has never used Kickstarter. He found out from me messaging him.

So I think a little more investigation and speculation is warranted.

From the way that backers seem to be clustered geographically, my own guess is that word of mouth was perhaps the largest factor in who backed this project.

Is it May yet? I'm very excited for this and that is saying something as I don't normally get excited anymore. I'm trying to find a way to cut my current campaign so it finishes in June next year so I can get everyone to use the new DF.

Or it's just that GURPS players are clustered in the first place.

In Australia the vast majority live in ten cities. And if you didnt live in one of those cities you would never have seen GURPS on display because there were never any FLGS outside of those cities.
