[WWII] Kawasaki Ki-3
OK, I think this is going to end my fascination with Japanese light bombers (because it's almost time for the Biplane of the Month!!):
Kawasaki Ki-3 The Ki-3 (Army Type 93 Light Bomber) was the last biplane to be produced for the IJA. It was an unequal span biplane, with the crew seated tandem in open cockpits. It featured a liquid-cooled engine with a supercharger that proved to be rather frustrating. Overall, however, it was considered to be a rugged and capable ground-attack aircraft. It first saw action in Korea in 1934, and was also used in the Second Sino-Japanese war during 1935. A total of 243 examples were built. It was ultimately replaced by the Ki-30 in 1938. The Ki-3 burns 30 gallons of aviation fuel per hour at routine usage. A full load of fuel and ammo (excluding bombs) costs $28. Subassemblies: Medium Fighter chassis +3; Medium Fighter Wings with Biplane option +3; 3 fixed wheels +0. Powertrain: 597-kW supercharged HP gasoline engine with 597-kW old prop and 90-gallon standard fuel tanks (Fire 14), 4,000-kWs battery. Occ.: 2 XCS Body Cargo: 9 Body Armor All: 2/3 Weaponry: Aircraft LMG/7.7mm [Body:F] (500 rounds). Aircraft LMG/7.7mm [Body:B] (500 rounds). 1,102 lbs. of Bombs [Wings:U]. Equipment: Body: Navigation instruments, universal mount for rear MG. Wings: 1,102 lbs. of hardpoints. Statistics: Size: 33'x43'x10' Payload: 1.60 tons Lwt.: 3.42 tons Volume: 200 Maint.: 65 hours Cost: $9,582 HT: 8. HPs: 120 Body, 80 each Wing, 12 each Wheel. aSpeed: 162 aAccel: 4 aDecel: 17 aMR: 4 aSR: 1 Stall Speed: 56 mph. -2 aSpeed per loaded hardpoint. gSpeed: 211 gAccel: 11 gDecel: 10 gMR: 0.5 gSR: 2 Ground Pressure: Very High. 1/8 Off-Road Speed. Design Notes: Historical wing area was 409 sf. Wing weight, cost and HPs were divided by 2 to lower design weight; the design loaded weight was decreased and additional 2% to the historical. Design payload was 2,137 lbs; the historical value has been substituted. Fuel tankage and ammo load outs are a guess. Design aSpeed was 189 mph; the historical value is shown above. Performance calculations were based on historical values for wing area and loaded weight.
