Default [WWII] Messerschmitt Bf 109Z Zwilling

Messerschmitt Bf 109Z Zwilling

The German equivalent of the American P-82 Mustang, the Bf 109Z was composed of two Bf 109F airframes united by a single wing and a forked tail section. Unlike the Twin Mustang, however, the plane was to be flown by a single pilot who controlled the plane from the cockpit of the left fuselage (the right cockpit being fared over). Two proposed variants included an interceptor model with five 30mm cannons and up to 2,200 lbs. of bombs and a fighter-bomber model with two Mk 108 cannons and two 2,200 lb bombs. Only one airframe was ever built, and never flew before being destroyed by Allied bombing, causing the project to be abandoned.

The Bf 109Z-1 burns 133 gallons of aviation fuel per hour of routine usage. A full load of fuel and ammo (not including bombs) costs $515. Historical range was 1,995 km.

Subassemblies: Two Medium Fighter chassis +3; Heavy Fighter wings +2; 4 retractable wheels +0.
Powertrain: Two 1,325-kW aerial Supercharged HP gas engines with two 1,325-kW props and 450-gallon self-sealing tanks [Body and Wings]; 8,000-kW batteries.

Design Notes:
The historical wing area was 250 sf. The fuel tankage and ammo loadouts for the autocannons are a guess. Historical empty weight is 13,224 lbs.; historical loaded weight is 16,050 lbs. This gives only 2,826 lbs. for payload. Given that a 2,200-lb. bomb load was supposed to be involved, this figure is obviously low. It was assumed in this design that these figures did not include a bomb. The design keeps two sets of landing gear (one from each chassis) that are then divided into four wheels. The design loaded weight was decreased 3% to the historical. Historical values for loaded weight and wing area were used for performance calculations.

Despite one source saying a plane never flew, an alternate source lists performance data for range and speed. The design aSpeed was 457 mph, the "historical" value is shown above.
