But that's not modern red, but Legendary Red, far hotter than modern white or ultraviolet.

In Tolkien's mythic cosmology technological progress is like building wheelchairs, dialysis machines and medications for your failing body and mind. The world and the live it holds is constantly decaying, physically and spiritually. The heat of Mount Doom is more than merely physical. It's supernaturally enhanced. Why do you think it erupts just because someone tossed a little ring into it? That is not a physical process. Of course if you can muster enough high tech firepower to break it, you'd better do it from quite a long way away, because...kaboom.

Every villain's lair self destructs once fully defeated, no matter how little sense it makes.
Being a volcano makes it less silly than most.

Yes, but we're talking about a crossover with ultratech, which has quite different founding assumptions.

I figure Mt Doom will be required in this case. The Magic inherent in the location is necessary to undo the Magic that made The Ring. This Middle-Earth is a Myth-Parallel and will have differences from Technical Canon Tolkien... and the party's previous meddling has already caused some waves in the path of the world with Gunpowder introduction.
<insert handwave>
I hadn't remembered Gandalf mentioning Dragon fire as a possible Destructor, but hey, that Wizard doesn't know everything. :)

If they decide to keep and use The Ring as a fun invis-stealth trinket then I am definitely pulling in Corruption rules from Horror. They will rue the day...

I've loved a ton of the ideas y'all have come up with. I like the idea of the Magic of The Ring rendering Gollum very nearly invisible to the TL9 goggles, including masking heat, light, sound and vibrations. Perhaps a blurry smudge, giving a -8 or -9 on the Vision roll, Predator-style, but no glowy IR footprints. It will be a challenge!

He says it wouldn't work on the One Ring but could work on lesser rings.

Indeed, I believe it was stated that four or five of the Seven Dwarf Rings were destroyed by dragon-fire, and that Durin's Ring (worn by Thain and Thror prior to Thror's imprisonment in the lair of the Necromancer) was believed destroyed by Smaug until Sauron offered it to Dain "as a sign of friendship".
